Hip Replacement in Young Active Individuals
Modern hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective option for young active patients who are restricted by severe osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, or certain other degenerative conditions of the hip. Historically, a common reason for long-term issues with a hip replacement had to do with the type of plastic used in the artificial joint. The older plastic frequently wore out after 15-20 years, which limited this operation for patients in the later stages of life. Since around 2005, a new version the plastic bearing, highly-crosslinked polyethylene, was developed. This plastic was engineered to have a stronger molecular structure that resists wear. The outcomes using this material have been outstanding with minimal evidence of plastic wear observed after 20 years of use. Many of the complications seen with the older generation material are very infrequently encountered. For this reason, hip replacement surgery is now a reasonable option for younger patients with advanced hip arthritis.
